The modern art collection includes European and American paintings, sculpture, and works on paper that has been developed over the years by many generous donors.
The Edward J. Gallagher III Memorial Collection consists of more than 200 works, by artists such as Willem de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Barbara Hepworth, Alberto Giacometti, Aristide Maillol, Joan Brown, Jackson Pollock, Giorgio Morandi, and Mark Rothko. In 1979, the Jacques and Yulla Lipchitz Foundation donated sixty terracotta and plaster maquettes, various tools from the artist’s studio, numerous portrait busts, and several fully realized sculptures. In addition to German Expressionist works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rotluff, and Christian Rohlfs, the modern collection also features paintings and prints by Käthe Kollwitz, Edward Okun, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edouard Vuillard, Théo van Rysselberghe, and Alphonse Mucha.
